A New School Year. A Fresh Start

Welcome Back, everyone!

The summer holidays have flown by, and here we are at the beginning of another school year. New classrooms, new teachers, new routines and new friendships. At Reach Behaviour, we want to wish every child, family, teacher and school a very warm welcome back.

There is something really special about the start of a new school year. It gives everyone the opportunity for a fresh start.

Perhaps last year was a difficult one. Maybe there were challenges with friendships, emotions, behaviour, learning or confidence. Whatever happened before the summer, a new school year gives children the chance to press the reset button.

A fresh start doesn’t mean forgetting the challenges we’ve faced. It means recognising that every day is another opportunity to try again, make a different choice and have a positive experience.

And that’s something we should remind ourselves of too!

For some children, returning to school will be exciting. They’ll be eager to see their friends, tell everyone about their summer adventures and get back into their routines. For others, it might feel a little overwhelming.

New classrooms, unfamiliar expectations and changes to routines can bring lots of different emotions. A child might feel excited and anxious at the same time — and that’s completely okay.

Sometimes children don’t have the words to tell us “I’m feeling worried about this change.” Instead, those feelings can show up through behaviour.

This is where patience, understanding and connection can make such a difference.

Before we ask, “What’s the behaviour?” let’s ask, “What’s the child trying to tell us?”

As we begin the new school year, let’s celebrate the small wins. Getting through the school gate, making a new friend, trying something that feels difficult, asking for help.

Taking a breath instead of reacting, having a go after getting something wrong. These moments might seem small, but for some children they are huge achievements.

Here’s to fresh starts, new beginnings, new opportunities and lots of reasons to smile!

Welcome back — you’ve got this!
