A Little Christmas Magic, A Lot of Consistency!

As we return to school after half term, we begin one of the busiest and most exciting times of the school year the run-up to Christmas! With performances, parties and festive activities, there is always so much happening. Whilst this is exciting for many children, for some of our children, it can also be overwhelming.

Christmas brings lots of changes to the normal school day. Timetables are altered, classrooms are decorated and rehearsals begin. For children who rely on structure and predictability, these changes can create feelings of uncertainty and anxiety.

The key is to keep routines and expectations consistent whilst still allowing children to enjoy the fun of Christmas.

Prepare children for changes, use visual timetables and explain what will be happening. Remember that not every child will enjoy the same activities. Some may love the excitement of a Christmas party, whilst others may find the noise and busy environment overwhelming. Offering and providing quiet spaces can make a real difference.

As we get closer to Christmas, continue with clear boundaries, familiar routines and positive behaviour strategies. Remember to celebrate the small successes along the way.

A little bit of Christmas magic, alongside familiar routines, can go a long way!

Let’s make this Christmas term a positive and enjoyable one for all our children, remembering that those who find change the hardest often need our consistency, patience and understanding the most.
