Five Minutes Inside a Busy Mind

I was working with a child today and I asked him a question… He noticed a game in my bag and asked me about the game …. I said we would be playing that later and steered the conversation back to my original question … He started to answer my question but then asked me a question instead… He did not wait for my answer …. He asked another question … I was getting confused and my brain felt like it was being whirled around.  This was a 5-minute interaction with a child who has been diagnosed with ADHD.  He struggles in class for many reasons, but the main one is that he loses focus so easily and does not then know what he is supposed to be doing.  Imagine having such a busy mind with thoughts interrupting other thoughts, leading into different thoughts.  How exhausting and frustrating it must be.  His energy is infectious and he has an amazingly creative mind.  He just needs help with organising and focusing his thoughts, so he has the chance to respond to one idea at once.  There are so many children like this in our schools – notice them and help them.  They need understanding and support, so they can bring their creative ideas into our classrooms.
