This is My Place

Next week it is children’s mental health week, and the theme is ‘This is My Place’.  The week is hosted by the charity Place2Be and focuses on fostering a sense of belonging in schools, homes, and communities for children.  Children need to feel they are listened to and supported to help their sense of belonging and I believe schools do this well.

We help children to feel they belong by:

o creating classrooms that encourage children to talk, listen to each other, and ask for help if they need it.

o creating classrooms where children can make mistakes and learn from them.

o creating spaces in classrooms for children to regulate and ‘take a minute’ if they are feeling overwhelmed.

o teaching children how to manage their emotions and let them know it is ok to feel different feelings at different times (and sometimes all at once).

o celebrating our successes and our differences and accepting each other for who we are.

We encourage children to be kind to each other and want children to never feel left out.

We look forward to seeing everyone celebrating the importance of belonging next week when we are out in schools.
