It’s that time of year in schools and I am thinking specifically about staff here – we end the year with a mixture of emotions:
- Excitement about the holidays – a chance to spend time with family and friends, a chance to relax and recharge our batteries, a chance to do all the things we love but never have time for in term time.
- Sadness that the class we have worked so closely with all year will be moving on. Getting the children to work to the best of their ability and behave in a way that makes your classroom a positive place to be takes time and effort; those children now move on, and it all starts again in September with a new class of young learners.
- Excitement for the children who are moving onto the next chapter in their school life and excitement (maybe mixed in with some nervousness) about the new class of children that will be coming up to you in September.
- A sense of achievement – think back to where your children were at the beginning of the year and look at where they are now. They will all have made progress and developed skills they did not have when they first arrived in your class. Some will have made more progress than others, but that is fine – we all learn and develop at our own pace.
- Proudness – there is lots of negativity about teaching as a job on social media and in the press but think how hard you worked to become a teacher or TA. Would you really want to be doing any other job? No two days are the same and children develop and nurture their dreams within your care. What a privilege that is.

As we visit schools in these last few weeks, we see plays, parties, celebrations, and fun. Enjoy these moments and think about all the positives from the year; it is magical (and extremely exhausting), and those memories of the children and the difference you make will stay with you forever.
