Aspirations

We work with lots and lots of children throughout the year and we often talk about what they want to be when they are older. We both have our own children (Sue has grandchildren too) who are at very different stages within their lives. All of our children have gone down different routes as they have grown up: some of them have gone to university and are now working, some are still at university and some of them have gone straight into the world of work, the route they take is a personal one and one that has to be their choice (but maybe with a little guidance from mum and dad).

We often ask the children we work with what do you want to be when you are older?  The responses are varied some do not know, which is fine but many of them want to be a footballer, a policeman/woman or a doctor, they are the typical responses. I think what is important is that we encourage our children to have aspirations in life and that we support them with whatever they decide to do.

As a parent and a teacher my hopes and aspirations for the children I support have included –

  • Making sure they are healthy and happy.
  • Making sure they have the skills and confidence to explore the world.
  • To help them to be able to achieve and be successful to the best of their abilities.
  • To ensure they feel safe and secure.
  • To develop positive ad meaningful relationships with their family and with staff supporting them.
  • To have confidence.
  • To be able to pursue their own dreams.
  • To develop resilience and to be able to problem solve, so they are ready for when life presents with challenges.
  • To be loved and to grow up with loving adults around them.
