You Are Not Alone

Yesterday, we travelled up the M6 to attend a conference. We had spent time planning what we would be presenting to a group of great Headteachers, and we had set off in plenty of time. As we were travelling, our Satnav kept increasing our time of arrival until we were only just going to make it in time. There had been an accident on the M6, and the motorway had been closed. Normally, the fact that I would be arriving late would have caused me to get really stressed and panicky, but it did not affect me in that way this time. Why? ………. Because I knew that everyone else was in the same position as us.

Looking around me, there was a low-lying mist over the fields, and it looked beautiful, there was wildlife everywhere, and the views were spectacular.  I could not change this situation, so there was no point in worrying, and this thought helped keep me calm.

It made me think about the school staff we work with – when we meet up in different groups or clusters, staff often end sessions by saying, “It is so good to know that it is not just happening to us.”

I think it is important for everyone to know that all schools have their successes, and all have their difficulties.  By talking and sharing in open conversations, we can support each other and hopefully stop that feeling of stress and panic that it is only happening to you in your school.  By looking out for each other and communicating our concerns, we will find ways to support children, staff, and families together.

Remember – you are not alone.

It also made me thing that there are always things to be thankful for – someone started their day by being involved in an accident. Let’s hope they are ok.
