~The Colour Monster ~
by Anna Llenas

In 2015 my sister bought this book for my nephew, and we have used it in our work ever since to support younger children understand their emotions.
The Colour Monster’s feelings are all muddled up and his friend helps him to untangle them.
There are a range of resources that can be used with this book, and it can be used with different children in different ways.
Just remember that these colours relate to the emotions of the Colour Monster, but children may associate different emotions with different colours. For example, I think of green as being my happy colour (not yellow like the Colour Monster) and yellow for me is excitement. There is no right or wrong answer. Black is fear for the Colour Monster, but it makes me feel calm. Find out what your children think.

The Monster is encouraged to separate out his emotions and to put them into jars. Some children will be able to do this, but others will need help to understand basic emotions in themselves and relate them to incidents that happen. Once children recognise emotions in themselves, they can begin to learn to regulate them.
